Every order between those two numbers loses money, and an order at exactly $40 loses $8.80. The threshold is not merely permitting those orders: it is advertising for them. A customer sitting at $34 will add something cheap to reach free delivery and land in the middle of the losing band, which is precisely what the threshold was designed to make them do.

The page works out your own two numbers and tells you the gap between them, along with the loss on an order at the threshold itself and what each size of order actually leaves once the handling is paid for.

It says when the threshold is set correctly too. Above the break-even order there is no trap, and the page says so rather than finding a problem in every shop.

What it does not know is whether a small order is worth having anyway. A first order that loses two pounds and starts a customer who buys for five years is a bargain, and no arithmetic on this page sees that. It tells you what the order costs. Whether to take it is a different question and often has a different answer.

Margin on the goods only, before the handling — otherwise the handling gets counted twice and the answer flatters you.

Save as many versions as you like and put any two side by side, figure against figure, with the better one on each line marked and the difference in its own column. That screen is the one that decides things, and it is the part a free calculator cannot do at all. Online, trade and phone have different costs and different answers.
