A pay gap and unequal pay for the same work are two different things, and almost every conversation about the subject runs them together. A company can have a large gap with nobody underpaid for their role — if one group holds most of the senior jobs. That is usually what a large gap turns out to mean, and it is a different problem with a different answer.

So this gives you a mean and a median, side by side, and the distance between them. On the figures it ships with the mean gap is 15.03% and the median gap is 3.75%.

That eleven-point disagreement is the whole product. It says the payroll is not where to look: three people at the top move a mean a long way and a median not at all. The question the numbers are actually pointing at is who is in the senior roles and how they got there — which is why the quartile table is on the page underneath.

Report only the mean and a real problem can be invented out of three salaries. Report only the median and a real one can be hidden. Both, with the gap between them, is the only honest way round.

It refuses on small numbers. Below eight people in a group, one salary swings the whole figure — one senior hire reverses the sign — so the page says the number should not be quoted, reported or acted on, and shows it anyway because they are your figures and hiding them would be its own kind of dishonesty.

It is not a filing tool, it does not know your reporting obligations, and it is not advice. It is arithmetic on figures you already have, done on your own machine where nobody else can see them — which for this particular calculation is the reason to do it offline at all.

Save as many versions as you like and put any two side by side, figure against figure, with the better one on each line marked and the difference in its own column. That screen is the one that decides things, and it is the part a free calculator cannot do at all. This year against last year is the comparison that matters, and a gap that moved is worth more than a gap that is merely small.
