Revenue up seventeen and a half per cent. Profit down two point nine.

Nobody did anything wrong, and the profit still fell.

Selling two hundred more units added five thousand six hundred pounds of profit. The mix took six thousand and eighty of it back, because the share of the better-margin line dropped from sixty-seven per cent to thirty-five. Those two figures add back to the four hundred and eighty you actually lost, exactly, with nothing left over — which is what makes this an explanation rather than a plausible story.

That reconciliation is the whole point. Hold the mix and let only the volume move: that is the volume effect. Whatever is left is the mix. There is no residue and no fudge factor, so the two halves can be argued about separately and honestly.

The average margin is the figure that actually moved, from thirty-five per cent to twenty-nine, and nobody decided it should.

This is what a sales team paid on turnover does. They sell more of whatever is easiest to sell, which is usually the cheaper line, so revenue rises and everybody is congratulated while the profit quietly goes the other way. There is no villain in this arithmetic and the page does not look for one.

Two lines is enough to show the effect. Most businesses sell more than two things, and it does not need all of them to appear — put your best and worst margin lines in and the direction is right even where the size is not the whole story.

It will not tell you what to do about it. Pushing the better-margin line is the obvious answer and is often impossible, because the mix is usually set by what customers want rather than by what you would prefer to sell. The page tells you where the profit went; where it comes from next is a different question and not an arithmetic one.
