A roof is the trade where the quote and the job diverge most, and almost always in the same direction. You price what you can see from the ground, and then the covering comes off.

This puts the discoveries in the price before they happen. Tear-off and disposal as a separate line, because it is the one most often forgotten and the one most likely to reveal something underneath. An allowance for decking and timber repair, because there will be some and you cannot know how much. Access and pitch loading, because steep and awkward is slower and more dangerous and that is not a favour you do for free.

Underneath it is the same costing every trade needs and most skip: labour at its burdened cost rather than the wage, materials with a waste allowance, travel at what the van really costs per mile, and overhead recovered from a monthly figure spread across the hours you can actually bill.

And it argues with you. It says so when the labour rate is a wage rather than a cost, when no overhead is being recovered at all, when a percentage entered as margin was probably meant as markup, and when the job would leave the business earning less per hour than the person on the roof.

Two printouts, and they are deliberately different. The customer quote shows the price and the scope. The internal costing shows everything else. Handing a customer your margin by accident is a mistake you make once.
