Status appeared in every one of the thirty-one brand audits I have published. Not most of them: all. That consistency is the most reliable finding in the archive, and it points at something far older and more ordinary than luxury marketing.
Writing about status invites a sneering tone, and it explains nothing. From the inside, none of this feels like vanity. The clothes chosen for an interview are a status signal, and so is the restaurant picked for a first meeting. It is communication in a channel where words are not available and would not be believed anyway.
The framework covers the three conditions a signal has to meet, why status correlates far more weakly with price than anyone expects, and the section most readers find most useful: how to make the cost knowledge rather than money. Being early, understanding a field, belonging to a specific community are all costly signals that a small brand can supply and a large competitor structurally cannot.
Also included: how to read a market’s existing status rules before signalling into them, three positions with how each one is built and how each fails, and the failure nobody prices in, where the meaning of a signal changes while the product stays identical.
