There is one line missing from most electrical quotes, and it is not the cable. It is the testing, the inspection, the paperwork and the notification: real, billable, legally required work that gets treated as part of the job and handed over for nothing.

This puts it back. Accessories and points, the consumer unit, cable, and a costed line for certification time, so the hours you spend proving the installation is safe are in the price rather than absorbed by it.

Around that is the costing every trade needs and most skip. Labour at what it actually costs, not the wage — a $28 wage commonly costs $42 once payroll taxes, insurance, holiday and non-billable hours are counted. Materials with a waste allowance. Travel at the true cost of running the van. Overhead recovered from a real monthly figure spread over the hours you can genuinely bill, which is always fewer than the hours you pay for.

It also tells you what it thinks you have got wrong: overhead counted twice, a wage mistaken for a cost, markup entered where margin was meant, and a job that leaves the business worse off per hour than the person on the tools.

Two printouts, deliberately separate: a customer quote carrying the price and the scope, and an internal costing carrying everything else. Nothing about your margin can reach the customer by accident.
