About this product

Twelve people on thirty thousand, raised to thirty-three. Twelve times three thousand is thirty-six thousand dollars, and that is the number that goes in the budget.

Putting the structure back costs thirty-seven thousand six hundred more.

The bands above the bottom sit on differentials. Band B was 13.33% above the floor; after the rise it is 3.03% above it. Restoring that gap for band B pulls band C, which pulls band D, and each one is a real salary that somebody has to be told about.

Keeping the gaps as ratios has a consequence worth knowing before you start: everybody gets the same percentage. A ten per cent rise at the bottom is a ten per cent rise on the whole payroll, so the bill is ten per cent of every salary in the structure — seventy-three thousand six hundred, or eighty-six thousand eight hundred and forty-eight once employer on-costs are on it. That is not a rule of thumb. It falls out of the arithmetic, and the table shows it band by band.

The alternative is real and it is why it gets chosen: pay the bottom band and leave the rest. That costs nothing extra in cash. What it does is close the gap above the floor from 13.33% to 3.03%, and the page reports that as a number instead of as a warning.

It does not predict who will resign. That compression makes people leave is asserted constantly and cannot be read off a payroll — the people who stayed and the people who left were paid on the same structure, and nothing in a spreadsheet separates them. What the page can give you is the size of the gap before and after, which is arithmetic, and the cost of closing it, which is also arithmetic.

The differential is kept as a ratio rather than as a cash gap on purpose. Restoring a cash gap on a higher salary is a smaller rise in percentage terms, so it compresses the top of the structure instead of the bottom — quieter, and the same problem one floor up.

Bands with nobody in them are ignored rather than counted as zero, so an unused row cannot quietly pull the differentials out of shape.

Save as many versions as you like and put any two side by side, figure against figure, with the better one on each line marked and the difference in its own column. That screen is the one that decides things, and it is the part a free calculator cannot do at all. Run the same structure with two different figures for the bottom band and read them off against each other.

One HTML file. No account, no subscription, no internet needed. Opens on Windows, Mac and Android; the readme explains the extra step on iPhone and iPad, where Apple blocks JavaScript in downloaded files and every tool of this kind is affected.

Everything lives in your browser on your device. Nothing is uploaded, which is why it works offline and why nobody else can see your figures — and it also means clearing your browsing data deletes it. The tool does not pretend otherwise: the header shows how long since your last export at all times, turns amber after three days and red after seven, and export is one click that produces a plain file you keep.
