UX psychology for British businesses

Most UX advice sold in the UK is design advice with a psychological vocabulary attached. This is the other way round: I am an Industrial Psychologist with an MSc in Industrial and Organizational Psychology who also writes the code, so every recommendation arrives with a measurement rather than a preference.

British consumers research heavily before buying and abandon quickly when a page gives them a reason to doubt. That combination punishes two things in particular: a page that cannot say what it is for within five seconds, and a checkout that asks for more than it needs. Both are measurable, and both are usually fixable in a day.

What a UK engagement usually finds

  • Contrast that fails outdoors. The commonest failure on any site, and invisible to whoever wrote the text because they already know what it says.
  • A phone number field nobody needed. Frequently the most expensive box on a British service site: it reads as consenting to a cold call.
  • Delivery and returns discovered too late. UK shoppers look for both before deciding, and finding them at the payment step reads as concealment.
  • A checkout that demands an account. Still one of the most reliable ways to lose a sale that had already been agreed.
  • Trust signals in the wrong place. Placement matters more than the badge. Reassurance after the moment of doubt has passed is decoration.
One thing that now reaches UK businesses from outside the UK

The European Accessibility Act has applied since 28 June 2025 across all 27 EU member states, and it binds any business selling online to EU consumers regardless of where that business is registered. A UK company selling into the EU is inside it. The standard is WCAG 2.1 AA, and there is a full write-up on this site.

How I work with UK clients

Remote, in fixed-price pieces with the scope agreed before anything starts. No hourly billing and no open-ended retainer. You get a written report you can forward to your developer or your agency, and a call after you have read it rather than before.

Conversion consultants generally bill between $100 and $300 an hour, and senior strategic UX work in the UK is commonly quoted at several hundred pounds a day. Fixed prices exist here so that you know the number before you commit to anything, and so that I have no reason to make the work take longer.

Check my work before you contact me

Forty-seven full brand psychology audits are published on this site, free and complete rather than summarised. There is also a tool that runs fourteen measurable checks on any public page in about thirty seconds, with no email required. If the tool comes back clean, you have saved yourself a fee and I would rather you knew that.
