Checking saves three thousand eight hundred pounds. Below about one per cent faults it would cost more than it saves.

That threshold is the product. Most arguments about quality control are conducted without it, and both sides are usually right about something: checking really does pay at some fault rates and really is waste at others, and the line between them is exact and easy to work out once somebody writes it down.

The page counts the faults checking MISSES, which is the part usually left out of this sum and the part that makes the honest answer less flattering to inspection than the usual version. Checking never catches everything, and the ones it lets through still cost you.

There is no multiplier for reputation anywhere on it. The rule that a fault costs ten times more at the next stage and a hundred times more at the customer is folklore — no source anybody can point at, and it varies by orders of magnitude between industries. A page built on it would be inventing nine tenths of its own answer. What goes in here is what you can actually put a figure on.

The threshold moves, and the page is built to be used again rather than once. Checking that pays today stops paying if the fault rate improves — which is the awkward consequence of quality control working.

And below the line, the answer is not nothing. It is usually a sample, or checking only the jobs where a mistake is expensive, and looking at why faults happen at all — which is a different question this page does not touch.
