Job Posting Compliance Checker: Ontario 2026 Rules, BC, PEI and New Brunswick

What must an Ontario job posting include in 2026?

From 1 January 2026, employers with 25 or more employees must include in every publicly advertised posting: the expected pay or a range no wider than CAD 50,000 (not required above CAD 200,000); a statement if AI is used to screen, assess or select applicants; whether the posting is for an existing vacancy; and no Canadian experience requirement. Interviewed applicants must hear back within 45 days.

Ontario's posting rules came into force for postings put up on or after 1 January 2026, and most job-ad templates have not caught up. A CAD 60,000-wide range, a missing vacancy statement or "Canadian experience preferred" is now a contravention.

Paste the posting, choose the province and enter the pay; the checker flags what to fix under that province's law.

    Ontario, in detail

The rules are in sections 8.2 to 8.7 of the Employment Standards Act and Ontario Regulation 476/24. They apply to publicly advertised postings by employers with 25 or more employees on the day of posting, counted across all Ontario sites by headcount. They do not apply to general recruitment campaigns, help-wanted signs, internal-only postings, or jobs performed outside Ontario. Artificial intelligence is defined as a machine-based system that infers from its input to generate outputs such as predictions, content, recommendations or decisions. The ban on requiring Canadian experience covers work experience, credentials and networks; requirements set by licensing bodies are not affected.

What this will not tell you

This is a word-based check against the rules as read on 16 October 2026, not legal advice. It can miss a requirement phrased in an unusual way and can flag a harmless phrase. PEI's and New Brunswick's enacted wording was read from the bills as introduced; Newfoundland and Labrador's rules await proclamation; Quebec's French-language rules for postings are not covered. Human rights codes apply to every posting everywhere. Nothing you paste leaves your browser.

    Questions

    Questions people actually ask

Do Ontario job postings need a salary range in 2026?

Yes, for employers with 25 or more employees, in publicly advertised postings put up on or after 1 January 2026: the expected pay or a range, with no more than CAD 50,000 between the bottom and top. Jobs paying over CAD 200,000 are exempt.

Do I have to disclose AI in Ontario job postings?

Yes, if artificial intelligence is used to screen, assess or select applicants for the position, the publicly advertised posting must say so.

Can an Ontario employer require Canadian experience?

No. Since 1 January 2026, publicly advertised postings and related application forms cannot require Canadian work experience. Requirements imposed by a licensing body are allowed.

Does BC require salary ranges in job postings?

Yes, since 1 November 2023, for every employer: the expected wage or wage range for any job that can be filled in BC, including remote jobs. Phrases like "competitive" or "up to" do not comply.

What is the 45-day rule in Ontario?

Employers must tell every applicant they interviewed whether a hiring decision has been made, within 45 days of the last interview, and keep records of postings and notices for three years.
