TFSA Contribution Room Calculator (2026)

How much TFSA room do I have in 2026?

Add the yearly TFSA limits from 2009, or the year you turned 18 as a resident, to 2026 ($109,000 in total for someone eligible since 2009). Subtract every contribution you have made and add back every withdrawal made before 2026. The 2026 limit is $7,000. Withdrawals made in 2026 only come back on 1 January 2027.

Most TFSA over-contributions happen the same way: money comes out in spring, goes back in the summer, and the second deposit counts as new money because the withdrawal only gives room back next January.

Enter your birth year and what has gone in and out (or the room CRA My Account shows), and the calculator gives your room now, any over-contribution and your room on 1 January 2027.

They come back as room on 1 Jan 2027, not before.

The TFSA limit for every year

Room builds every year from 2009, or from the year you turn 18 and are a resident of Canada, whichever is later. You get the full limit for that year even if you turn 18 in December. Years when you were not a resident add no room.

Total from 2009 to 2026: $109,000.

Worked example

Born in 1994, so room starts in 2012. The limits from 2012 to 2026 add up to $94,000. Before 2026 she put in $80,000 and took out $3,000, so her room on 1 January 2026 is $94,000 − $80,000 + $3,000 = $17,000.

In 2026 she puts in $7,000 in January, takes $4,000 out in March, then puts in $9,000 in May and $3,000 in July. That is $19,000 of contributions against $17,000 of room. The March withdrawal does not help this year, so from July she is $2,000 over and owes 1% a month ($20) for each month the excess stays in. Her room on 1 January 2027 will be −$2,000 + $4,000 withdrawn + the 2027 limit.

How the over-contribution tax works

An excess TFSA amount is taxed at 1% a month, on the highest excess in the account during each month it stays. CRA's own example: a $2,000 over-contribution made in June and removed in September costs $20 a month for June, July, August and September, $80 in all. Taking out part of the excess lowers the tax from the next month; the month you take it out still counts at the highest amount in that month.

New room on 1 January absorbs an excess left at the end of the year, but the tax for the months before that is still owed.

Common mistakes

  • Putting a withdrawal back in the same year when there is no other room left.
  • Counting only one bank: the room is shared by every TFSA you hold.
  • Treating a direct transfer between two TFSAs as a withdrawal and a new contribution. A direct transfer is neither; a withdrawal you redeposit yourself is both.
  • Relying on the CRA figure in the middle of the year: it shows room as of 1 January and does not include this year's deposits.
Before you rely on this

What this will not tell you

This estimates TFSA room from the yearly limits and the totals you enter. It does not handle years of non-residence after you first became a resident, qualifying transfers, the special rules for deceased holders or successor holders, or the exact timing of withdrawals that removed an excess earlier in the year. The 2027 figure uses $7,000 until CRA announces the 2027 limit. CRA My Account shows your official room. Nothing you type leaves your browser.

Questions

Questions people actually ask

What is the TFSA limit for 2026?

$7,000, the same as 2024 and 2025.

What is the total TFSA contribution room in 2026?

$109,000 for someone who has been 18 or older and a resident of Canada since 2009 and has never contributed.

What is the TFSA limit for 2027?

It had not been announced on 2 November 2026. The limit is indexed to inflation in $500 steps, and CRA usually publishes the next year's figure in late November or early December.

When can I put back money I took out of my TFSA?

On 1 January of the next year. A withdrawal is added to your room at the start of the following year, so putting it back sooner uses room you already have.

What is the penalty for over-contributing to a TFSA?

1% a month on the highest excess amount in each month it stays in the account, reported on a TFSA return.

Does unused TFSA room carry forward?

Yes. Unused room carries forward indefinitely and is added to each new year's limit.
