Maternity and Paternity Leave in Pakistan: Calculator by Province
How much maternity leave is there in Pakistan?
It depends on who employs you. The federal Maternity and Paternity Leave Act 2023 gives 180 days for the first birth, 120 for the second and 90 for the third, on full pay, plus 30 days' paternity leave, for establishments under federal control. Provinces differ: Sindh 16 weeks after one year's service; Balochistan 14 weeks; Punjab and KP 12 weeks after four months (14 weeks under Punjab's new Labour Code once it applies).
The 180 days people quote for Pakistan comes from the 2023 federal Act, which covers federal establishments. Most women in private jobs are under a provincial law that gives 12 to 16 weeks.

Who the 2023 federal Act actually covers
The Maternity and Paternity Leave Act 2023 applies to public and private establishments under the administrative control of the Federal Government, and it overrides other laws where it applies. Its text does not make clear that it reaches an ordinary private company in Islamabad; that company is safest treating the 1958 Ordinance as the minimum and the 2023 Act as good practice. In the provinces, the provincial Act applies.
Paternity leave
Only two laws give fathers paid leave: the federal 2023 Act (up to 30 days on full pay, at most three times) and the Punjab Labour Code once it applies (7 days, not available with two or more surviving children). Sindh's 2018 Act, despite what several websites say, has no paternity provision; nor do the KP and Balochistan Acts.
What this will not tell you
This applies the leave rules to the dates you enter. It does not read your contract or HR policy, which can give more; it does not decide medical extensions, which need a certificate; and it cannot settle whether the 2023 federal Act binds an ordinary Islamabad company, or which Punjab regime applies on your date. Sindh's Act was read from the gazette text on a mirror because the official site was unreachable. Nothing you type leaves your browser.
Questions people actually ask
How many days of maternity leave are there in Pakistan's private sector?
Under provincial law: 12 weeks in Punjab (14 under the Labour Code once it applies), KP and Islamabad private employers; 14 weeks in Balochistan; 16 weeks in Sindh. The 180 days are from the 2023 federal Act, which covers establishments under federal control.
Is maternity leave paid in Pakistan?
Yes. Each law sets the pay: the wages last paid (Punjab 1958, KP, Balochistan, Islamabad 1958), the same salary (Sindh), average monthly remuneration (Punjab Labour Code), or full pay (federal 2023 Act).
Is there paternity leave in Pakistan?
Under the federal 2023 Act, up to 30 days on full pay, at most three times. Under the Punjab Labour Code, 7 days if there are fewer than two surviving children. The Sindh, KP and Balochistan Acts have none.
How long do I need to have worked to get maternity leave?
Four months under the 1958 Ordinance (Islamabad, Punjab), KP and Balochistan; six months under the Punjab Labour Code; one year in Sindh. The federal 2023 Act states no minimum.
Can I be dismissed because I am pregnant?
The Punjab Labour Code bars dismissal for four months after a worker returns from maternity leave. Under the federal workplace harassment law as amended in 2022, discrimination on the basis of gender is itself harassment, which a pregnancy-related dismissal can be. Check your own province's maternity Act for its dismissal rule.
