No Tax on Tips and Overtime Calculator 2026

How much is the no tax on tips and overtime deduction?

For 2025 to 2028 you can deduct up to $25,000 of qualified tips and up to $12,500 of qualified overtime ($25,000 joint), whether or not you itemize. Only the premium half of time-and-a-half counts. Each deduction drops by $100 for each full $1,000 of MAGI over $150,000 ($300,000 joint). Social Security and Medicare still apply.

Many people think the whole overtime check, or Social Security and Medicare on tips, became tax-free. Neither is true: it is a federal income tax deduction, it covers only the overtime premium, and married couples must file jointly to claim it.

Enter your tips and overtime premium (or overtime hours and hourly rate) and your expected MAGI to see both deductions and an estimate of the tax saved.

Tips and overtime in 2026

Tips customers chose to give (cash, card, tip pool). Not service charges.
On the 2026 W-2 this is box 12, code TT.
Fill this and your hourly rate to estimate the premium instead.

The two deductions, side by side

Tips: up to $25,000 a return of qualified tips: tips customers give freely, in cash or by card, including tips shared through a tip pool, in an occupation on the IRS list of jobs that customarily received tips on or before 31 December 2024. Mandatory service charges and automatic gratuities do not count. Self-employed people in a specified service trade or business (and employees of one) cannot take it, and for the self-employed the deduction cannot exceed the net profit of the business. Overtime: up to $12,500 ($25,000 joint) of qualified overtime compensation, the part of FLSA-required overtime pay above the regular rate. Both need a social security number valid for work, and married people must file jointly.

Worked example: overtime

Regular rate $18 an hour, 46 hours in a week. The 6 overtime hours pay 6 x $27 = $162, of which 6 x $18 = $108 is straight time and 6 x $9 = $54 is the FLSA premium. Only the $54 counts. If the employer pays double time ($216 for those hours), the qualified amount is still $54: the IRS says only the amount the FLSA requires counts, so double time, daily overtime and weekend premiums in a week under 40 hours are left out. For 2026 the employer reports the figure on Form W-2, box 12, code TT, and the IRS says only that reported amount can be used.

Worked example: the phase-out

Single, MAGI $172,400, qualified tips $14,000. MAGI is $22,400 above $150,000. The reduction counts only full $1,000 steps: 22 steps x $100 = $2,200, so the tips deduction is $11,800. At MAGI of $150,999 nothing comes off; at $151,000, $100 does. A joint return starts the phase-out at $300,000. The tips and overtime deductions are each reduced by the same amount.

What it does not change

Tips and overtime are still income. Social Security and Medicare are still withheld (7.65% for employees), and self-employed tips still carry self-employment tax. State income tax follows each state's own rules. The deduction lowers taxable income, so what it saves depends on your bracket: a $10,000 deduction saves $1,200 at 12% and $2,200 at 22%.

What the full checker adds

The No Tax on Tips + Overtime Checker 2026 (Excel, Google Sheets and an offline web version) adds the full IRS occupation list with codes, a shift-by-shift tips log (cash, card, tip pool, tip-outs, service charges kept apart), a workweek overtime log that splits the FLSA premium from double time, the self-employed profit limit, itemized deductions, and a plain-words check of every rule on your numbers.

Before you rely on this

What this will not tell you

An estimate of the deductions and the rules, not tax advice and not instructions for a form. It assumes the standard deduction and ordinary income, does not cover the self-employed profit limit, specified service businesses or FLSA exemptions (assumed met), and treats MAGI as the figure you enter. Nothing you type leaves your browser.

Questions

Questions people actually ask

Is all my overtime tax-free now?

No. Only qualified overtime compensation counts: the FLSA premium above your regular rate (the 'half' of time-and-a-half), up to $12,500 ($25,000 joint), and it is an income tax deduction, not an exemption.

Do I still pay Social Security and Medicare on tips?

Yes. The deductions are federal income tax only. Social Security and Medicare (7.65% for employees) still apply to tips and overtime.

What is the income limit for no tax on tips?

The deduction drops by $100 for each full $1,000 of modified AGI above $150,000, or $300,000 on a joint return.

Can I take the deduction if I don't itemize?

Yes. Both deductions are available whether you take the standard deduction or itemize.

Can married couples filing separately claim it?

No. Married people must file a joint return to claim either deduction.

Which jobs count for no tax on tips?

Occupations on the IRS list of jobs that customarily and regularly received tips on or before 31 December 2024: about 70, from bartenders and wait staff to hairstylists, rideshare drivers and delivery people.

How long does no tax on tips last?

The tips and overtime deductions apply to tax years 2025 through 2028.
