Reseller Profit Calculator: What You Keep on Each Platform
How much do you keep after eBay, Poshmark or Mercari fees?
On a $40 item with $8 shipping and 7% sales tax, eBay US takes about $7.38 (13.6% of the whole $51.36, plus $0.40), Mercari $4.80 (10% of $48), and Poshmark $8.00 (20% of $40, but it pays for the label). After a $7.50 label and a $10 item cost, that leaves about $23.12, $25.70 and $22.00.
Resellers lose money in the gaps: eBay charges its percentage on the sales tax too, Poshmark takes 20% but covers the label, Facebook has a minimum fee, and UK and Canadian rules are different again.
Pick your country and platform, type the price, shipping and what you paid. The table compares the same sale on every platform in your country.

The fee rules this uses
- eBay US and Canada: 13.6% of the total sale (item, shipping and sales tax) up to $7,500, 2.35% above, plus $0.30 per order of $10 or less or $0.40 above. Books, movies and music 15.3%; athletic shoes 8% with no per-order fee from $150; women's bags 15% (9% over $2,000).
- eBay UK: private sellers pay no final value fee. Business sellers pay the category rate (clothes, shoes and accessories 11.9%), 30p or 40p per order, a 0.35% regulatory operating fee and the listing fee, plus VAT.
- Poshmark: US $2.95 under $15, 20% from $15. Canada C$3.95 under C$20, 20% from C$20, plus GST/HST on the fee.
- Mercari US: 10% of the item price plus buyer-paid shipping, with no separate processing fee since 6 January 2025.
- Depop: no selling fee for US and UK sellers; payment processing (about 3.3% + $0.45 in the US, 2.9% + 30p in the UK) still applies.
- Vinted UK: no seller fee; the buyer pays for Buyer Protection.
- Facebook Marketplace: shipped orders 10% with a $0.80 minimum in the US and 2% in the UK, on the whole amount. Local pickup is free.
- Etsy: 6.5% transaction fee, payment processing (US 3% + $0.25, UK 4% + 20p, Canada 3% + C$0.25), a regulatory operating fee in the UK (0.48%) and Canada (0.50%), and the $0.20 listing fee.
A worked example
A pair of jeans bought for $9 (plus $1 to clean) sells on eBay US for $40 with $8 shipping. eBay adds 7% sales tax at checkout: $3.36. eBay's fee base is the whole $51.36, so the fee is 13.6% of $51.36 = $6.98, plus $0.40 for an order over $10 = $7.38. eBay pays out $48.00 − $7.38 = $40.62. Take off the $7.50 label and the $10 cost: $23.12 profit, a 48% margin on the $48 the buyer paid for the item and shipping.
The same jeans on Poshmark at $40: 20% = $8.00, the label is Poshmark's, so you keep $32.00 − $10 = $22.00. On Mercari: 10% of $48 = $4.80, payout $43.20, minus the label and cost = $25.70.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting the tax in eBay's fee. eBay's percentage is charged on the sales tax the buyer pays, even though the tax is not yours.
- Counting buyer shipping as profit. It is money in, but the label is money out. Profit is payout minus your label minus what the item cost.
- Using last year's fee table. Mercari dropped its processing fee and moved to 10% in January 2025; Depop removed UK and US selling fees in 2024; eBay UK stopped charging private sellers. Old spreadsheets still have the old numbers.
- Ignoring small-sale minimums. Poshmark's $2.95 flat fee is 30% of a $10 sale; Facebook's $0.80 minimum and eBay's per-order fee bite on cheap items.
Platform reporting lines
In the US, a platform files a Form 1099-K when your payments on that platform are over $20,000 and over 200 transactions in a year (the One, Big, Beautiful Bill restored this line; some states use lower ones). In the UK, platforms report sellers to HMRC from 30 sales of goods or over 2,000 euros (about £1,700) a year. In Canada, platforms report to the CRA from 30 sales of goods or over C$2,800. A report does not by itself mean tax is due. The full tracker keeps a running count per platform.
What this will not tell you
Standard published fees only: promotions, Promoted Listings, Boost, Offsite Ads, store subscriptions, international fees, currency conversion, refunds and returns are not included. Depop's processing rates come from guides quoting Depop's page, which blocks automated checks. eBay categories not listed use the most-categories rate. This is an estimate, not tax or financial advice. Nothing you type leaves your browser.
