I/O Psychology Salary by Country: US, UK, Canada, India, PH, PK, ZA

What I/O psychologists earn in seven countries, in one table. Every figure carries its source and date, and self-reported estimates are labelled as such.

In this article
Short answer

I/O psychology pay depends mostly on the country and the job title. In the US, the Bureau of Labor Statistics gives a median of $193,950 a year for industrial-organizational psychologists (May 2025). UK occupational psychologists start at about £28,000 to £42,000 (Prospects). For India, the Philippines, Pakistan and South Africa, only small self-reported samples exist.

This page is for psychology, HR and business students who want a straight answer before they choose an MSc, write a career-planning assignment, or decide whether to move abroad. Most salary pages cover one country. Here you get seven countries in one table, and each figure comes with its source, its date and a note on how solid it is.

I am an Industrial and Organizational Psychologist in Karachi, and the most common question my juniors ask is “how much will I earn?” The honest answer has two parts. Government data exists only for the US, the UK (as career-guide bands) and Canada. Everywhere else, the numbers come from a few dozen people who typed their pay into a website. I show both, and I label them. All figures were checked on 3 November 2026. I have not converted currencies, because exchange rates change every week and a converted number looks more exact than it is.

I/O psychology salary by country: the comparison table

Country Figure What it measures Source and date How solid
United States $193,950 a year (median) Industrial-organizational psychologists BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025 wages Government survey of employers, but a small occupation
United Kingdom £28,000 to £42,000 entry; £40,000 to £55,000 experienced; £70,000 or more senior Occupational psychologists Prospects job profile, November 2025 Career-guide bands, not a survey median
Canada $52.88 an hour (median); low $37.65, high $77.43 All psychologists (NOC 31200), listed under “industrial psychologist” Job Bank, wages updated 19 November 2025 (2023-2024 data) Government data, but not I/O only
India ₹475,000 a year (average); range ₹73k to ₹993k Industrial-organizational psychologist Payscale, 18 profiles, updated 5 October 2026 Self-reported estimate, small sample
Philippines ₱18,116 a month (average) Psychometrics specialist Indeed Philippines, 47 salaries, updated 7 October 2026 Self-reported and job-ad estimate
Pakistan Rs 46,146 a month (average) Psychologist (all fields) Indeed Pakistan, 17 salaries, updated 20 October 2026 Self-reported and job-ad estimate, very small sample
South Africa R299,401 a year (average); range R95k to R664k Industrial-organizational psychologist Payscale, 45 profiles, updated 1 September 2026 Self-reported estimate

Read the last column before the second. A median from a government survey of employers and an average from 18 people on a website are not the same kind of number, even when they sit in the same table.

I/O psychology salary by country table: US, UK, Canada, India, Philippines, Pakistan and South Africa with source and date
The seven figures in one picture. Each one comes from a different kind of source, so compare them with care.

United States: what the Bureau of Labor Statistics says

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) runs a survey of employers called Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OEWS). It has its own code for industrial-organizational psychologists (19-3032). The Occupational Outlook Handbook reports a median annual wage of $193,950 in May 2025 for this group. That is the highest of the psychologist types BLS lists: clinical and counselling psychologists $100,580, school psychologists $95,990, and “psychologists, all other” $110,840. For all psychologists together the median was $99,110.

Be careful with that $193,950. I/O psychology is a small occupation in this survey. In May 2023 the OEWS estimated only 1,030 I/O psychologists in employer payrolls, with a median of $147,420 and a mean of $154,380. When a group is that small, the estimate can move a lot from one year to the next. So treat the US figure as “very well paid compared with other psychologists”, not as a promise.

Bar chart of US BLS median wages: I/O psychologists 193,950 dollars in May 2025 and 147,420 in May 2023, all psychologists 99,110
US medians from BLS. The jump between 2023 and 2025 is one reason to read a small occupation’s figure with caution.

Two more points from BLS help with planning. First, BLS says I/O psychologists “typically need a master’s degree”. Second, it projects I/O psychologist employment to grow 6% from 2025 to 2035, from about 4,000 to 4,300 jobs. That is only 300 new jobs over ten years, so the field is well paid but narrow. Most people trained in I/O psychology in the US work under other titles such as people analytics, talent assessment or consulting. The honest worth-it guide looks at those other titles.

United Kingdom: occupational psychologist pay

In the UK the field is called occupational psychology. “Occupational psychologist” is a protected title: you may only use it if you are on the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) register. The graduate careers site Prospects gives these bands (page dated November 2025):

  • Entry level: around £28,000 to £42,000 a year, depending on whether the role is a trainee or early-career post.
  • Experienced: between £40,000 and £55,000.
  • Senior, principal or highly specialised: £70,000 or more.

These are bands from a careers guide, not a survey median, and Prospects does not say which year of data they come from. They are still the clearest public figures for this exact title. If you want to know how long it takes to reach the “experienced” band, read how to become an I/O psychologist: the British Psychological Society’s Stage 2 training takes two to four years after the MSc.

Canada: Job Bank wages

Canada’s government site Job Bank lists “industrial psychologist” as a job title, but it places it inside the wider group “Psychologists” (NOC 31200). So the wage below is for all psychologists, clinical ones included. Job Bank gives a national median of $52.88 an hour, with a low of $37.65 and a high of $77.43 (wages updated 19 November 2025, mostly from Statistics Canada’s 2023-2024 Labour Force Survey).

Provinces differ. The median is $58.00 in Alberta, $51.82 in Ontario, $50.00 in Quebec and $49.09 in British Columbia. If you want a yearly figure, a rough sum helps: $52.88 an hour for 37.5 hours a week over 52 weeks is about $103,000. That is my arithmetic, not a Job Bank figure, and real hours vary.

India, the Philippines, Pakistan and South Africa: self-reported estimates

For these four countries no government survey separates I/O psychologists from other workers. What exists are sites like Payscale and Indeed, where people enter their own pay or where pay is read from job ads. Use them as a rough guide only.

India

Payscale shows an average of ₹475,000 a year for an industrial-organizational psychologist, with a base range of ₹73,000 to ₹993,000. It is based on only 18 salary profiles (updated 5 October 2026). Many Indian I/O graduates work in HR. For comparison, Payscale’s HR business partner average is ₹1,004,563 from 367 profiles (updated 15 September 2026).

The Philippines

Payscale’s Philippine page for I/O psychologists was last updated in August 2020 and shows no profile count, so I have left it out of the table. Indeed Philippines gives better-dated figures: ₱18,116 a month for a psychometrics specialist (47 salaries) and ₱26,469 a month for a psychologist (18 salaries), both updated 7 October 2026. An HR business partner averages ₱40,829 a month (435 salaries, 28 October 2026). In the Philippines the psychometrician licence and the psychologist licence are different things, which the country guide explains.

Pakistan

Payscale has no I/O psychologist page for Pakistan. Indeed Pakistan shows Rs 46,146 a month for a psychologist (17 salaries, updated 20 October 2026), which mixes clinical, school and other roles. Almost no Pakistani job ads use the title “industrial psychologist”. The work is advertised as HR, training and talent roles, and those pay more: an HR business partner averages Rs 114,150 a month (23 salaries, same date). My page on the scope of industrial psychology in Pakistan counts the job ads in detail.

South Africa

South Africa is the one country in this group where “industrial psychologist” is a registered title, with its own Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) category. Payscale shows an average of R299,401 a year (base R95,000 to R664,000, 45 profiles, updated 1 September 2026). Indeed South Africa shows R21,817 a month from 15 salaries (updated 5 July 2026). An HR business partner on Payscale averages R491,084 (185 profiles).

Why the job title matters more than the degree

Look at the HR business partner numbers again. In India, the Philippines, Pakistan and South Africa, the HR business partner average is higher than the psychologist or I/O figure on the same sites. This does not mean the psychology is worth less. It means that outside the US, UK and South Africa, employers pay for the role, not the degree name.

So when you plan, ask two questions. Which titles in my country use I/O skills (selection, assessment, training, survey analysis)? And what do those titles pay? The last question under “Questions students ask” gives a starting list, and the I/O psychology vs HRM page shows where the two fields overlap.

How to read a salary website without being fooled

  1. Check the sample size. Eighteen profiles can be moved by two or three high earners.
  2. Check the date. A page that says “2026” at the top may rest on data from years earlier, as the Philippine Payscale page shows.
  3. Check the job group. Canada’s figure covers all psychologists; Pakistan’s covers every kind of psychologist.
  4. Median or average? A median is the middle value. An average (mean) can be pulled up by a few very high salaries.
  5. Monthly or yearly? Indeed reports monthly pay in Pakistan and the Philippines, Payscale reports yearly pay.
How to answer this in an interview

“What salary do you expect?” (a structured answer)

  1. Name the role, not the degree: “For an assessment or talent analyst role in Karachi…”
  2. Give a source and a date: “Indeed’s October 2026 figures for similar HR roles show…”
  3. Give a range, not one number, and say what it depends on (city, sector, shift).
  4. Link it to a skill you bring: psychometric test use, survey design, data analysis.
  5. Close by showing you are flexible for the right learning and supervision.

Model opening line: “I have looked at published figures for similar roles in this city, and a range between X and Y seems fair for someone with an MSc in I/O psychology and my testing experience.”

Practice MCQs: I/O psychology salaries and data

Practice questions written for this page, to check that you can read salary data properly.

  1. Which source on this page is a government survey of employers?

    1. Payscale
    2. Indeed
    3. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics OEWS
    4. Prospects
    Show answer

    C. OEWS is run by BLS and collects pay data from employers. Payscale and Indeed rely on self-reports and job ads, and Prospects is a careers guide.

  2. BLS gave a median of $193,950 for US I/O psychologists in May 2025. Why should a student read this with caution?

    1. The figure is in Canadian dollars
    2. I/O psychology is a small occupation, so the estimate can shift a lot between years
    3. BLS only surveys clinical psychologists
    4. The figure includes HR managers
    Show answer

    B. OEWS counted only 1,030 I/O psychologists in May 2023, and the median moved from $147,420 to $193,950 by May 2025. The other options are simply false.

  3. Canada’s Job Bank wage for “industrial psychologist” is based on which group?

    1. Only I/O psychologists
    2. All psychologists in NOC 31200
    3. HR specialists
    4. Management consultants
    Show answer

    B. Job Bank lists the title under NOC 31200, Psychologists, so clinical psychologists are in the same figure.

  4. Which of these is NOT a good reason to distrust a salary page?

    1. It is based on 18 profiles
    2. Its data was last updated in 2020
    3. It reports the median rather than the average
    4. It mixes several job types under one title
    Show answer

    C. Reporting a median is a strength, because it is less affected by a few very high salaries. Small samples, old data and mixed job groups are all real weaknesses.

  5. Ayesha earns Rs 46,000 a month as a psychologist in Lahore. A friend in Manila earns ₱26,000 a month. What is the safest conclusion?

    1. Ayesha earns more because 46,000 is bigger than 26,000
    2. You cannot compare them without converting currency and considering living costs
    3. Manila pays more because the Philippines licenses psychologists
    4. They earn the same
    Show answer

    B. Rupees and pesos are different currencies, and living costs differ. Comparing raw numbers across currencies is the most common mistake on this topic.

  6. In the UK, which title can only be used by people on the HCPC register?

    1. Psychologist
    2. Business psychologist
    3. Occupational psychologist
    4. Organisational consultant
    Show answer

    C. “Occupational psychologist” is one of the nine HCPC protected titles. “Psychologist” on its own is not protected by law, and the other two are not regulated titles.

  7. In India, the Philippines, Pakistan and South Africa, the HR business partner average on the same sites is higher than the psychologist figure. What does this suggest?

    1. I/O psychology skills are useless
    2. Employers pay for the role and title more than for the degree name
    3. HR business partners need a PhD
    4. The data must be wrong
    Show answer

    B. Outside a few countries, I/O work is advertised under HR titles. The figures do not show the skills are useless, and HRBP roles do not need a PhD.

  8. BLS projects US I/O psychologist jobs to rise from about 4,000 to 4,300 between 2025 and 2035. What does this tell you?

    1. The field is shrinking
    2. The growth rate is 6%, but the number of new jobs is small
    3. There will be 4,300 openings every year
    4. Every I/O graduate will find an I/O psychologist title
    Show answer

    B. A 6% rise on a base of 4,000 is only 300 jobs. Openings per year are not given for I/O, and growth is not decline.

  9. Which figure on this page is a career-guide band rather than a survey statistic?

    1. UK £40,000 to £55,000 for experienced occupational psychologists
    2. US median $193,950
    3. Canada median $52.88 an hour
    4. US May 2023 mean $154,380
    Show answer

    A. The UK bands come from the Prospects job profile. The other three come from BLS or Job Bank survey data.

Questions students ask

What is the salary of an industrial psychologist in the Philippines?

There is no government figure for I/O psychologists alone. Indeed Philippines shows ₱18,116 a month for psychometrics specialists and ₱26,469 a month for psychologists (October 2026). Payscale’s I/O page is from 2020, so do not rely on it. HR business partners average ₱40,829 a month on Indeed.

What is the salary of an industrial psychologist in South Africa?

Payscale shows an average of R299,401 a year from 45 profiles (September 2026), with a base range of about R95,000 to R664,000. Indeed shows R21,817 a month from 15 salaries. Both are self-reported. Neither source separates HPCSA-registered industrial psychologists from others with similar titles.

What is the salary of an I/O psychologist in India?

Payscale shows ₹475,000 a year on average from only 18 profiles (October 2026), with a wide range of ₹73,000 to ₹993,000. Most Indian I/O graduates work under HR titles; Payscale’s HR business partner average is ₹1,004,563 from 367 profiles.

Which country pays I/O psychologists the most?

Of the seven countries here, the US has the highest published figure: a BLS median of $193,950 (May 2025). But a US role usually needs a US master’s or doctorate, and for some work a state licence, so the figure is not open to everyone.

Do I/O psychologists earn more than clinical psychologists?

In the US, yes: BLS shows $193,950 for I/O psychologists against $100,580 for clinical and counselling psychologists (May 2025). In other countries no source on this page separates the two, so I cannot say.

Which jobs use I/O skills if “industrial psychologist” ads are rare?

Talent acquisition and assessment, learning and development, organisational development, HR business partner and people analytics roles. In Pakistan my count of job ads found I/O work under these titles; check the job boards in your own country the same way.
